Practical Measure: Student Responses to Assessing & Advancing Questions
This tool is a practical measure designed to document and analyze the types of student responses to assessing and advancing questions that teachers pose during planned discussions. It includes a table, to categorically tally student responses for a set period of time, or across one or more class periods. The types of responses are based on the clarifying learning variations in the innovation configuration map organized around the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ teaching practice – pose purposeful questions.
This tool is a suggested practical measure for educators designing and testing change ideas to plan and use purposeful questions to assess and advance students’ reasoning and sense making about important mathematical ideas and relationships.
